“New York is not a city, it’s a world.”
—Truman Capote

The Big Apple, home of the United Nations and Broadway, birthplace of hip hop and the Gay Rights Movement, the subject of countless novels and films, New York is a great melting pot and one of the most diverse places on earth. With innumerable opportunities and so much to explore, living in New York is the most exciting part of the Bard NYC experience! It can feel a bit overwhelming at first, but don’t worry: Bard NYC staff are here to help you navigate city life and tackle any challenges you might face. You’ll get a sneak peek into what professional life is like in a bustling environment, learning to conquer the concrete jungle. Embrace the adventure ahead!

"I find New York City incredibly energizing. My internship in the heart of Times Square, one of the busiest places in the city, is something I truly enjoy as I admire the energy of the people and the bustling atmosphere."
— Diana, Fall 2024

Adapting to NYC

Adapting to NYC

Bard NYC programs are prefaced by a weeklong orientation, which introduces students to New York, helping them adapt to life in Williamsburg and explore the city more broadly. Among other topics, orientation introduces students to using public transportation, best approaches to stay safe and secure in an urban environment, time management, budgeting, and balancing academics with internships and free time. Orientation includes various staff-led excursions both in and outside of Williamsburg, helping to establish a sense of community while introducing participants to different parts of New York City.

New York City Programming

Each semester Bard NYC offers various excursions and activities in and about New York City to help students make the most of their time here. Through these activities students are able to explore and learn more about the rich culture, history, and heritage of New York. Events include classic NYC entertainment and events such as attending a Yankees game, going to Broadway shows, a tour of the Financial District and ice skating in Bryant Park. They also include cultural/educational activities, such as a tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a visit to the historic neighborhood of Weeksville (a Brooklyn heritage site), and a tour of Ellis Island. In addition to the Bard NYC–sponsored events, staff regularly provide resources and announcements about interesting, nonsponsored events that students may take advantage of while in New York.

Tips + Resources for Living in NYC

Safety and Security
While New York City is one of the safest metropolitan areas in the United States, the following tips can help anyone navigate the city safely and confidently:
  • Be Aware of Your Surroundings: NYC is always bustling and fast-paced. Stay alert, especially when using your phone or navigating unfamiliar areas. In particular, students should stay aware of bike lanes and other street traffic in their surroundings. Pay attention to the people around you and avoid distractions that could make you a target for pickpockets or scams.
  • Use Trusted Transportation Options: Opt for well-known and reputable transportation methods. Use official subway and bus services, or ride-share apps like Uber or Lyft. If you’re hailing a cab, make sure it’s a licensed yellow cab. The official MTA app is a reliable source for real-time information about transit routes and safety concerns.
  • Stay in Well-Lit, Populated Areas: When walking around the city, stick to well-lit and busy streets. Avoid shortcuts through dark or deserted areas, particularly at night. NYC is generally safe, but staying in populated areas can help you avoid potential risks.
  • Keep Valuables Secure: Keep your belongings secure and avoid flaunting expensive items like jewelry or large amounts of cash. Always be cautious of your personal items in crowded places like subway stations or tourist spots.
  • Know Emergency Contacts and Procedures: Familiarize yourself with local emergency numbers and procedures. In case of an emergency, call 911. Keep a list of emergency contacts and important information like program staff and internship supervisors.
Program staff provide tips and advice to students on staying safe and secure during program orientation and are available to assist students in need 24 hours a day. General information about staying safe in NYC from the NYPD can be found here.
Costs to Consider
Living in New York City can be expensive, even when housing is included in your program. Bard NYC staff work with students to help make life in the city as affordable as possible, but here is a rough estimate of the monthly costs a student might incur:

Food: $500–700/month
If you’re eating out frequently or buying prepared meals, costs can be higher. Budgeting for groceries and occasional dining out can help manage expenses. Students often take advantage of apps like Too Good To Go, which can make a variety of local restaurant food available at a discounted price.

Transportation: $100–140/month
The cost of a subway or bus ride is $2.90, and using public transportation is a necessity in New York. The good news is that the weekly fare cap on riders using the Omny system is $34, with all subsequent rides free of charge

Personal Expenses: $50–120/month
This can include things like toiletries, daily supplies, and other personal items.

Entertainment and Social Activities: $75–140/month
NYC offers countless activities, so budget for activities, events, or outings. Costs can vary depending on your lifestyle, and many events are offered by the program at no additional cost. NYC also has a variety of free and discounted events program staff help students navigate.

We estimate that students should budget between $725–1100 per month based on current costs associated with living in NYC. This estimate covers the basics outside of expenses billed by the College, however true costs will vary by lifestyle choice and personal preferences.
Saving Money in an Expensive City
Living in NYC can be pricey, but there are several strategies students can use to save money while still enjoying their time in the city:
  • Ask Locals/Bard NYC Staff: Many of our staff have spent years or more in the NYC metropolitan area, and we are here to help students navigate all aspects of living in an expensive city. Ask us for recommendations on cheap eats, inexpensive activities, and more!
  • Use Student Discounts: Many stores, restaurants, and entertainment venues offer student discounts. Always ask if a discount is available and be sure to carry your student ID.
  • Take Advantage of Free and Low-Cost Activities: NYC offers numerous free or low-cost activities, such as free museum days, public events, and outdoor activities in parks. Program staff will provide local resources and guides students may choose to follow in addition to a weekly Bard NYC newsletter detailing local events and resources.
  • Cook at Home: Eating out can be expensive. We advise that students plan and prepare meals at the dormitory to save on food costs. This could include bringing lunches to class and/or internship days, sharing costs of meals with other students (meal-prep services, community cooking, etc.) and more. Apps such as Too Good To Go can help students access affordable meals.
  • Limit Expensive Habits: Be mindful of frequenting expensive coffee shops, stores, and restaurants. Look for budget-friendly alternatives or limit how often you indulge in pricey outings.
